Dotted Line

Viola, via Sant'Isia, 24, T 051-331 884. Closed Thu, open 1700-2300. Gentle Austrian-style café and one of the few places in town with seats and plenty of space to stretch tired legs. Also do great aperitivi, but close early.

Walkabout, via Nosadella. New happening bar very close to the English language cinema. Full of bright young things from the early evening onwards, there is also a quieter room out the back for those just wanting a drink and a chat.

Zelig, via Porta Nuova, 4/b (off piazza Malpighi) T 051-236737. Open every day for drinks or supper, this is the favourite hangout of Marco Jaric, the local basketball star. Run by a charismatic signora with unusual taste in clothing. Book ahead.

Auld Dubliner, via Cairoli, 2/c, T 051-243138. Open lunch and evenings. Large, spacious and friendly, this is the only venue in town (possibly in Italy) to offer genuine UK favourites such as shepherd's pie, fish and chips and baked potatoes with chilli. With an all-Irish bar staff this is the place to drown your sorrows in pints of ice-cold Guinness.

Borderline, via Riva di Reno, 110, T 051-221359. 1200-1500, 1830-0230. Closed Tue. Large friendly bar offering happy hour priced drinks between 1830 and 2130, with a fantastic array of aperitivi snacks. They also have a full range of board-games out the back and are happy for you to while away the hours over a pint and a game of backgammon.

Chet Baker, via Polese 7/a, T 051-22 37 95, http://www.chetbaker.com Closed Sun. Jazz café with indoor seating and a veranda in the summer. Open for lunch with Emilian cuisine, worth booking ahead. Mussolini's son has been known to play this venue with a host of fascisti packing the place out in advance.

Del Mercato, via Belvedere 13, T 051-237844. Opposite the mercato delle Erbe, a nice place to relax with a lunchtime glass of wine after the bustle of shopping.

Rumba, via Milazzo 17/f, T 051-63 90 792, http://www.rumbacafe.it Modern and trendy resto-café with live jazz and blues on Wednesdays. Happy 'hour' on Thursday from 1800-2330. The menu boasts a range of international and fusion cooking, different from the traditional regional dishes.

Birreria Amadeus, via G Dagnini 1, T 051-6234011. Southeast of Centro Storico. Over 100 types of beers from German lagers to strong Belgian beers and including exotic brews from New Zealand and Japan. Pizza slices, crostini and pastries are complimentary munchies. A little more expensive than most bars.
