Ugo, via San Felice 24, T 051-263849. According to many locals the best gelato in town and certainly rightfully famous for high-quality creamy licks.

Altero, via dell'Indipendenza 33, T 051-234758. One of a chain of snack bars reliable for good pizza al taglio (by the slice). There is also a branch at via Ugo Bassi 10, T 051-226612.

Calderoni, via dell'Indipendenza 70, T 051-248208. A popular bar on this main street. Downstairs a range of pastas, salads and cakes are on display. In the late afternoons the upstairs turns into a piano bar serving decent cocktails and delicious ice-creams.

Duchamp Caffe d'Arte, via N Sauro 12. Very chic Parisian Art-Déco style bistro with a dark wooden interior serving select wines and beers, and a limited range of chic snacks. Expensive but cool.

Impero, via dell'Indipendenza 39, T 051-232337. An old pasticceria now part of a chain but still with original furnishings serving delicious croissants and various pastries at all times.

Piccolo, via Riva Reno 114, T 051-236389. Mon-Fri 1000-2000 Supposedly Bologna's first 'green' bar this place caters for lovers of all beverages natural and organic: malt cacao, goats milk cappuccino, plum cake with honey and many savoury delights, organic beers, teas and tisanes.

La Caramella, via Cadriano 27, T 051-505074. Northeast of via San Donato beyond tangenziale. A calorifc extravaganza – one of the best cake and sweet shops in Bologna serving local specialities such as torta di riso (rice cake) and innovative concotions, as well as 24 types of chocolate. At lunchtime there is a buffet of salads and piazza slices, croissants – in fact anything you could possibly want.

Poco Loco, via Mezzofanti 18, no T. In a residential district southeast off via Mazzini. A Mexican ranch-like establishment in a leafy residential area just outside the Centro Storico this is the place to go for brunch on Saturday mornings where a feast of abundant and delicious self-service dishes will cure any hangover.
