Italy has an excellent network of autostrade (motorways) that in a country which is two-thirds mountain often involve amazing feats of engineering. Bologna is linked by the A1 to Milan (2 hours), Florence (1 hour) and Rome (three hours), by the A13 to Venice and Padua and the A14 to Rimini, Ravenna and the Adriatic coast. All motorways are tolled (eg driving from Rome to Bologna costs approximately 15, travellers on a budget might therefore prefer the strade statali or SS) which are toll-free dual carriageways. The nominal speed limit is 130 km for motorways and 110 km/h on SS, although both are conspicuously flouted by the natives. EU nationals taking their own vehicle need an International Insurance Certificate, also known as a carta verde (green card). For more information on this contact Automobile Club Italiano (T 06-49981, 24hrs). Emergency breakdown (ACI) T 116.
