As befits a rebellious city, Bologna has a long-standing tradition of satire, practiced and honed to a fine art on so many Lords and Popes. Bologna is the head office of Italy's only satirical newspaper, Cuore, a weekly rag of irreverence similar to Private Eye. There is no long-standing tradition of stand-up comedians in Italy and comedy is usually acted out within plays and spectacles on show at one of the city's theatres. The closest thing to Italian stand-up is at Ruvido, east of town at via Maserati 9, T 051-6311892. One of the city's current most acerbic and satirical voices is that of the novelist, journalist and playwright, Stefano Benni.
