Bologna is easily and economically accessible from the UK: the cheapest flights to the city are from London Stansted either with Go direct to Bologna airport, or with Ryanair who fly to Forlì, 45 km to the southeast.
There is no underground, but a very efficient bus system, though generally, your feet is all you'll need. The most Bolognese method for getting around the city (and by far the most fun) is either by bicycle or moped. Both these will allow access to Bologna's back streets and hidden sights. A good-value and reasonably efficient network of public transport can take you on trips out into the hills or to the surrounding cities of Parma, Ferrara, Imola, Modena and to the sea at Rimini.
If you'd like somebody to show you around, informative walking tours take you to the some of the less-discovered corners of the city, bus tours give your legs a rest, and wine and food tasting tours are a good excuse for more copious consumption of the area's produce. You can even orientate yourself by going up in a balloon.
