Dotted Line

€€ Benso, vicolo San Giobbe 3, T 051-223904. Closed Sun. Tucked down an intriguing little passage on the edge of the old Jewish ghetto this is a fun restaurant. A series of interlinked sexily-lit little rooms are always full and popular with footballers and fans of Bologna FC (as you can tell by the decor and strange murals) especially the day after a match. It is a famous restaurant founded in 1903 and now owned by Beppe and Piero who stick to Bolognese traditional cuisine for the main courses while their southern roots come through in unmissable desserts like gelato ripieno all frutta and cassata siciliana. There is an interior garden for eating outside in summer.

€€ Bentivoglio, via Mascarella, 4/B, T 051-265416, http://www.affari. com/bentivoglio 2000-0200. Closed Mon. Set in a basement evocative of the cellars of the Bentivoglio palace this is the best place to hear live jazz. The Ronnie Scott's of Bologna and something of an institution in the city, the slightly disappointing food (relatively speaking, of course – this is Bologna) is compensated for by the quality of the music, the appropriately cool ambience and an extensive wine list of over 400 labels. Advisable to book, especially at weekends and if you want to eat late. See website for information on visiting artists and full programme. Short cookery courses sometimes offered.

€€ Doge, via Caldarese 5, T 051-227980. Closed Mon. Slightly kitsch but air-conditioned setting with tasty pizzas and Mediterranean food and fresh fish every day.

€€ Donatello, via Righi 8, T 051-235438. Closed Sat. An elegant restaurant with high frescoed ceilings and traditional furnishings that has been open since 1903. The menu offers a vast choice of dishes with the local specialities of boiled meat being particular tasty among the secondi. Try the slices of beef in balsamic vinegar. The walls tell of 100 years of popularity among famous artists and musicians, from Puccini to Bocelli. The restaurant is still often frequented by sports and showbiz personalities.

€€ Pino, via Goito 2, T 051-227291. Closed Mon. Wood oven-cooked pizzas and fresh Bolognese cuisine with hand-made pasta. Outside veranda during the summer.

€€ Annamaria, via delle Belle Arti 17, T 051-266894. Closed Mon. Set just behind the Teatro Comunale in the lively university district, this famous and hospitable restaurant is often frequented by actors and 'VIP' from Italian showbiz, a fact to which the photographs emblazoned all over the walls play testament. The menu is rooted in Bolognese tradition with fresh handmade pastas and sauces centre stage. The sfogline can be seen kneading their stuff by day. The speciality is tortellini alla gorgonzola. Alernatively try the roast rabbit followed by Bolognese trifle or the crème brûlée.

Il Portico, via A Righi 11, T 051-221185. Closed Wed. A good value and functional restaurant with a warm decor, nice turn-of-the-century furniture set within a classic arcade. The pizzas are particularly good and the restaurant also offers a more substantial and typical menu.

La Farfalla, via Bertiera 12, T 051-225656. Closed Sat eve and Sun. A genuine and humble trattoria still with its rather kitsch post-war decor. Very welcoming, delicious and superb value. Another taste of the real Bologna.

Le Maschere, via Zappoli, 5, T 051-261 035. Closed Sun. Ingenious and spicy fish recipes combining Romagna with Egypt. Popular and small so book ahead. Specialities lobster, seafood spaghetti or risotto, coquilles San Jacques, and squid kebabs.
