€€€ Drogheria della Rosa, via Cartoleria 10, T 051-266 864/ 051-222 529. Closed Sun. This cosy restaurant run by the ebullient Emanuele Addone used to be a food store (hence its name) and still retains the original furnishings, doors and window frames. Superior dishes from all over Emilia-Romagna are served in an intimate atmosphere with an exceptional choice of wines. The mozzarella alone is beautifully juicy and sweet.

€€€ L'Anatra e l'Arancia, via Rolandino 1, T 051-225505. Closed Sun. Literally 'the duck and the orange' this atmospheric and young-spirited restaurant is more Romagna than Emilia, mostly based on seafood with the odd innovative fusion such as pate de foie gras with shellfish. All dishes come served with piadina, the traditional Romagna bread.

€€ Buca San Petronio, via dei Musei 4, T 051-224589. Closed Thu except holidays. Below street level, this sumptuous drawing-room style restaurant is popular with tourists but that should not deter you. The fritto misto is delicate and delicious, as is the mouthwatering lemon mousse to follow.

Set in the arcades overlooking arguably the most tranquil and picturesque square in Bologna, Cesarina offers specialities from all over Emilia-Romagna and particularly good fish dishes such as Maltagliati with moscardini fish, and has an impressive selection of international wines and spirits to match. The speciality of the house is cannellone stuffed with thin tagliatelle, porcini mushrooms and parmesan.
