Dotted Line

€€ Trebbi, via Solferino 40, T 051-583713. Closed Sat lunch. One of Bologna's historic trattorias, open for over 50 years and serving simple local fare that seems to go down well with late-night stragglers and their drink.

Bottega Albertini, via dei Coltelli, 9/2, T 051-228 532. Closed Sun. Formerly the Sale e Pepe restaurant, this establishment serves creative cuisine, specializing in non-traditional dishes such as cream puff with hot chocolate in a romantic candle-lit setting. The fixed price of €15 per head for a meal including wine makes this one of the best deals in town.

€€ Degli Angeli, via Farini 31, T 051-268032. Closed Sat lunch and all Sun. In this little 'tavern of the angels' you can eat like the gods even if the pleasure of the food seems sinful – in particular the lamb cutlets. All will be forgiven.

€€€ Dei Poeti, via dei Poeti 1, T 051-236166. Closed Mon. Another of Bologna's oldest osterias located in the 14th-century Palazzo Senatorio. It owes its modern name to the custom of the Bolognese poets Carducci and Pascoli and could perhaps be accused of resting on their laurels. There are two rooms: one smaller with a fireplace and the larger where three times a week there is live music. Besides the excellent choice of Italian wines you can feast on typically wholesome Bolognese fare.

€€ Le Mura, via Falcone, 13, T 051-331772. Closed Mon. Although only 15 minutes walk from the centre, its location just inside the perimeter mean this simple, lively and informal restaurant, where typical Bolognese fare is served in generous portions and without ceremony, is largely ignored by tourists. Great for entertaining large groups. Book in advance.

€€ L'Infedele, via Gerusalemme 5, T 051-239456. Closed Mon. Small bohemian joint with classic snacks and some primi piatti for those with more of a twist.

Clorofilla, strada Maggiore 64, T 051-235343. Closed Sun. One of Bologna's few lifestyle-eating propositions with a minimalist-naturalist décor this restaurant offers healthy dishes mixing ingredients from all round the world complete with explanations of their healthy properties. Particularly big on salads which might provide light relief for non-vegetarians. There is a wide selections of teas and tisanes, and even the beer and wine are organic.

€€€ Trattoria Battibecco, via Battibecco 4, T 051-2232298. Closed Sun. Only a trattoria by name in order to evoke a sense of tradition, make no mistake, this is one of Bologna's most expensive and luxurious restaurants, as far away from a trattoria as can be. The décor is sophisticated with a wooden ceiling, tiled floor and trompe l'oeil walls with backlist recesses. There's no denying the sumptuousness of its predominantly fish-based dishes which are mix of traditional and experimental, all served in a refined atmosphere tucked away in a quiet narrow street in the heart of the historic centre.

€€€ Biagi alla Grada, via della Grada 6, T 051-553025. Closed Tue. Open since 1937 and still in the hands of the founding Biagi family this traditional elegant restaurant offers typical Bolognese cuisine cooked to perfection. By common consent the tortellini, handmade by the corpulent Signor Biagi whose size is testament to fine living, are the best in town.
