Dotted Line

€€€ Biagi alla Grada, via della Grada 6, T 051-553025. Closed Tue. Open since 1937 and still in the hands of the founding Biagi family this traditional elegant restaurant offers typical Bolognese cuisine cooked to perfection. By common consent the tortellini, handmade by the corpulent Signor Biagi whose size is testament to fine living, are the best in town.

€€ Amedeo, via Saragozza 88, T 051-585060, Closed Tue. This is a lovely restaurant with tables underneath the porticoes popular with students celebrating graduation. Amedeo is originally from Basilicata in the south of Italy but the cuisine here is all Bolongese with one or two inventions in the secondi.

€€ Cesari, via Carbonesi 8, T 051-237710. Closed Sun, also Sat in summer. A warm welcome awaits here in a resplendent inner room complete with a cast-iron chandelier and antique engravings. The menu is a reliable, standard choice of typical local and regional food.

€€ Della Santa, via Urbana 7, T 051-330415. Closed Sun. Another typical Bolognese trattoria but a highlight in its vast gastronomic landscape serving fresh home-made tortelloni and tagliatelle in a typical arcaded building with a wood-beamed ceiling. Nice informal service. Book ahead.

€€ Meloncello, via Saragozza 240, T 051-6143947. Closed Mon eve and Tue. Superbly positioned in the corner of the city leading out through Porta Saragozza, this old trattoria has for years prepared those who are about to make the pilgrimage up the porticoes to San Luca or restored them coming down. Intimate and a little bit musty, it really feels like the extension of an Italian family home with a dedicated clientele of regulars. The rabbit with polenta is delicious and stuffed zucchini a speciality. Essential to book ahead during the fesival of San Luca in May. Ask for a table in the tiny backroom which is also non-smoking.

€€ Due Porte, via del Pratello 62, T 051-523565. Closed Tue. A homely tavern serving Bolognese and southern pasta dishes with a broad selection of wines from all over Italy.

€€ La Traviata, via Urbana, 5/C, T 051-331298. Mon-Fri for lunch. Mon-Sat for dinner. Not surprisingly a musical theme reigns in this informal bar, with old instruments hung on the walls. Its low lights, dark wood and informal atmosphere as well as simple but tasty dishes make it popular with young locals.

€€ Montesino, via del Pratello 74, T 051-523426. Closed Mon. Congenial hangout for good food and wine, with a leaning towards the Sardinian roots of the owner. A quiet place as the owner will not accept groups. The poems written on the table cloths are reputedly published in a tri-annual collection.

€€ Ribalta, viaM d'Azeglio 41, T 051-331101. A charming spot with walls covered in posters of old Bologna.
