Bass' Otto Cafeteria, via Ugo Bassi 8, T 051-232511. Closed weekends. A modern and noisy bistro ideal for a quick and inexpensive meal.

Brancaleone, via Santa Caterina 51, T 051-585111. Closed Sun and Mon. A candlelit and intimate pub-bar with a limited but tasty range of dishes from the Abruzzi region.

Cantinone, via del Pratello, 56/A, T 051-553223. Closed Tue. On a road famous for its high concentration of bars, this is one that since the 70s heyday has been popular among students and cheaper as a result. A quirky place with a broad selection of soups and wines and also just about any product you can make from milk. Not so hot on the beer.

Fantoni, via del Pratello 11 T 051-236358. Closed Sun and also Mon eve. An old-style trattoria serving very good value Bolognese food on a picturesque ancient street with views onto chiesa San Francesco and the piazza.

Senzanome, 42 via Senzamnome /A, T 051-331147. Closed Mon. Delicious tripe and dishes with beans. Pleasant, simple old-world ambience, open until late.

€€ Taj Mahal, via San Felice 92, T 051-524894. Closed Tue. The most informal and economical of Bologna's Indian options without the attention to recreating a full-on Indian atmosphere but with typically friendly Indian service.

€€€ Caracci, via Manzoni 2, T 051-222049. Mon-Sun. This famous restaurant is located within the premises of the Grand Hotel Baglioni, the luxury address for visitors to Bologna. The restaurant itself is set in a magnificent hall with frescoes by artists from the Carracci school whose name it bears. Service is top class and the atmosphere refined, while the menu covers local specialities and also many international dishes.

€€€ Diana, via dell dell'Indipendenza 24, T 051-231302. Closed Mon. Part of the establishment since the 1920s this elegant and sophisticated restaurant, complete with crystal chandeliers is one for gourmets wanting to appreciate the finer nuances in the local cuisine. The Dindo Diana (turkey) and the chicken galantine are the restaurant's signature main courses while the apple meringue cake is an unmissable pudding.
