Bologna is well-equipped with facilities for all the usual urban sporting pursuits such as football, tennis and swimming. From a spectator point of view the city also has football and basketball teams that are well worth watching.
Set in the lee of the Apennines, Bologna is perhaps surprisingly also a great place for more unusual outdoor and adventurous pursuits such as cross-country cycling, kayaking, hiking, rafting and, in winter, skiing.
As elsewhere in Italy, il calcio (football) in Bologna is followed like a religion and during the season you are liable to see men walking in silence in the park on Sunday afternoons with a radio attached to one ear listening to the game. It has been a while (1964) since Bologna FC won anything and only recently, courtesy of national icon Roberto Baggio, has the team begun to feature again as a major force, finishing in the top three of Serie A, Italy's premier division in the 01-02 season.
