Taxis in Italy are generally expensive as drivers will find any excuse to justify various add-ons. If booked by phone you will be charged for the journey to pick you up. Although technically possible, do not try to hail a taxi in the street. You might as well be waving to someone on the other side. It's best to queue up at the ranks in piazza Maggiore or outside the train station, or better still, think ahead and book by phone via the city's taxi co-operative on T 051-372727.
