Italy's climate makes it an attractive holiday or short-break proposition virtually all year round. Bologna can get extremely hot between May and September. There can also be regular and spectacular downpours of rain, especially in spring and autumn. In both cases the city's arcades really come into their own for shelter and shade. If there is a bad time to visit, it is August when many of the city's museums, buildings and worse still restaurants close, sometimes for the whole month, sometimes just for the middle two weeks. All year round, visitors staying for a long weekend are advised to make the most of the weekend days as many sights, shops and restaurants close on a Monday.
