Following fast in JoBurgs footsteps, Cape Town is gaining a solid reputation for having a vibrant arts scene. Music, as always, is the cultural focal point, with live music particularly jazz remaining hugely popular and culminating in the yearly North Sea Jazz Festival. The comedy circuit, too, is booming, attracting talent from around South Africa and overseas. The city also prides itself on its well-established classical music, opera and dance companies, although these have started to modernize in recent years the staid, whites-only scene is becoming more inclusive and experimental (and therefore much more interesting). Modern dance and theatre remain popular, although much of the fodder for political theatre, once the most fertile genre in the performing arts, has disappeared. Instead, large-scale musicals have become the most popular productions. Computicket: http://www.computicket.com, T 083- 9158000, for nationwide theatre, concerts and sport events.
