Cool Runnings, 108 Kloof St, Gardens, T 021-4248388. Daily 1100-late. One of Kloof Street’s most popular drinking holes. With a beach-bar themed deck and pub meals, it always gets packed at weekends with a lively throng.

Dros, Kloof St, Gardens, T 021-4236800. Daily 1200-late. Busy pub and bar serving standard pub fare, wine cellar decor, nice tables overlooking the street. Popular bar serving light meals and featuring communal drumming sessions. Grab a drum and join in, or watch the professionals on Friday and Saturday nights.

The Lounge, 194 Long St. Mon-Sat 2000-0200. R20. Fashionable bar and club with several small rooms, big sofas, house music most nights, drum ’n’ bass on Wed, great balcony overlooking Long Street.

Jo’burg, 218 Long St, T 021-4220241. Daily 1500-0300. Trendy bar serving pints and cocktails to a mixed crowd, gay-friendly, relaxed during the week but gets very busy at weekends when DJs spin funky house and drum ‘n’ bass. One of the best in the area.

Kennedy’s Cigar Bar, 251 Long St, T 021-4241212. Daily 1700-late. Upmarket cigar and cocktail lounge, old-fashioned brass-and-wood decor, daily live jazz, mature well-heeled crowd.

Mama Africa, 178 Long St, T 021-4248634. Mon-Sat 1900-late. R10, free if you’re eating. Great live music every night, usually Marimba. Part of the popular restaurant, the bar is smallish with a long, wood-carved green mamba making up the bar. Limited seating, great atmosphere, quite touristy.

Perseverance Tavern, 83 Buitenkant St, T 021-4612440. Daily from lunch-late. Cape Town’s oldest pub, pub food available in two dining rooms, beer garden, plenty of drinking corners, full on at the weekend, good Sunday roast lunch, live music.

Poo Na Na Souk Bar, Heritage Sq, 100 Shortmarket St, T 021- 4234889. 1700-late. Ultra-trendy bar decked out in Moroccan lanterns and expensive fabrics, lovely balconies overlooking the even trendier Strega restaurant, usually relaxed atmosphere but sometimes host big-name international DJs.

Purple Turtle Pub, Long St, T 021-4236194. Daily 1100-late. Grotty pub which remains very popular, with a large, dark interior dotted with TV screens. Pub lunches, pool tables, live bands on Sat. Virtual Turtle is their internet café spin-off, found upstairs and around the city.
