Purple Turtle Pub, Long St, T 021-4236194. Daily 1100-late. Grotty pub which remains very popular, with a large, dark interior dotted with TV screens. Pub lunches, pool tables, live bands on Sat. Virtual Turtle is their internet café spin-off, found upstairs and around the city.

Den Anker, Victoria & Alfred Pierhead, T 021-4190249. Daily 1100-0100. Belgian restaurant and bar specializing in a range of Belgian draught and bottled beers.

Quay Four, T 021-4192008. Daily 1100-late. Large shady deck overlooking the water, popular with well-heeled locals and tourists, good meals and great draught beer, one of the more pleasant pubs on the Waterfront.

Ferryman’s Tavern, next to the amphitheatre, Waterfront, T 021-4197748. Daily 1100-0100. A popular hauntwith restaurant upstairs, outside seating, TV continually showing sports action, the olives and feta go well with the Mitchell’s Beer brewed on site, a low-key crowd.

Sports Café, Victoria Wharf, T 021-4195558. Daily 1100-late. Sports bar showing matches on big screens, rowdy atmosphere and a mostly white, rugby-playing clientele.

Bosa Nova, Somerset Rd, Green Point. 1700-late. Large bar with seats overlooking the street, vague tropical theme, small dance floor at the back, pop and house music.

The Bronx, 35 Somerset Rd, corner Napier St, Green Point, T 021-4212779, http://www.bronx.co.za Daily 1900-late. Very popular gay bar and club with tiny main bar, plus two others, gets packed out at weekends, mostly men but women welcome, live DJs spin out thumping techno.

Buena Vista Social Café, Main Rd, Green Point, T 021-4330611. 1200-late, R30 after 2200. Cuban-themed bar and restaurant catering to a well-heeled crowd. Latin music, live bands at weekend, tasteful decor and a relaxed atmosphere, nice balcony, great spot for sophisticated cocktails on a hot evening.

Café Caprice, Victoria Rd, Camps Bay, T 021-4388315. Daily 1200-2300. Popular café and bar with outdoor seats overlooking the beach, great fresh-fruit cocktails, beautiful, well-heeled crowd, gets packed at sunset.
