Chilli ‘n’ Lime, 23 Somerset Rd, Green Point, T 082-2582382. 2100-late. R40. Trendy bar and club spread over two floors, with mirrored walls, stylish lighting and a tiny dance floor. Pretentious, over-priced and very young, but playing good hip-hop on Saturday nights.

Dizzy Jazz Café, 41 The Drive, Camps Bay, T 021-4382686. Daily, 1200-0100. Busy bar and live music venue, popular jazz nights at the weekend, wide terrace with sea views.

La Med, Glen Country Club, Victoria Rd, Clifton, T 021-4385600, http://www.lamed.co.za Tue-Sun, 1100-late. Popular meeting place for Cape Town’s young, white and well-off, busy bar next to the rocks and overlooking the sea, plenty of seats spilling out of the interior, good pub food, great for a sundowner, turns into a raucous club later on.

Skebanga’s, Red Herring, Noordhoek, T 021-7891783. Tue-Sun, 1100-0100. Outdoor deck with great views, upmarket pub atmosphere with an older, well-dressed crowd. Sports events screened.

Tuscany Beach Café, Victoria Rd, Camps Bay, T 021-4381213. Daily 1100-2300. Minimalist interior, good bar snacks, laid-back and trendy crowd.

Bijou, Lower Main Rd, Observatory, T 021-4480183. Tue-Sun, 2000-late. R15-30 after 2200. New ultra-trendy bar/club/theatre very popular with an arty pack, weekly fashion shows, plays, gigs and parties held in a huge open-air concrete theatre on the roof, dancing area on second floor, groovy bar on ground floor, great cocktails. Expect to pay an entry fee after 2200 or have a personal invite.

Café Ganesh, Trill Rd, Observatory, T 021-4483435. 1200-0100. Lively little café and bar serving hearty Cape dishes and ice-cold beers in a leafy courtyard leading to a characterful interior. Very friendly, great place to meet local Obs characters.
