Forrester’s Arms, Newlands Av, T 021-6895949. Daily 1100-late. A favourite with students, especially sports jocks. Standard pub with a fun-loving, boozy scene.

The Green Man, Main Rd, Claremont. Daily 1100-late. Most popular bar in Claremont despite its grim, modern interior. Very young, pint-quaffing crowd, small dancing area, mostly rock music, often frequented by Springbok players.

Keg & Grouse, Riverside Centre, Rondebosch, T 021-6893000. Daily 1100-late. English-style pub serving bar meals, popular with local students and older sporty types.

Sports Café, Atrium Centre, Claremont, T 021-6741152. 1100-late. Popular second floor bar showing all the important games on big screen TVs, tacky, busy balcony.

A Touch of Madness, Pepper Tree Sq, Nuttal Rd, Observatory, T 021-4482266. Daily 1500-late. Flamboyant bar with series of rooms decked out with tongue-in-cheek opulence, eccentric regulars, great atmosphere, good light meals.

The Brass Bell, by the train station in Kalk Bay, T 021-7882943. Daily 1100-late. Popular pub set right on the waves, great spot for a cold beer watching the sunset. Young, noisy crowd. Live music at weekends.

Cape to Cuba, Main Rd, Kalk Bay, T 021-7883695. Tue-Sat, 1200-2300. Atmospheric Cuban restaurant which turns into a cocktail bar later on, great drinks, lovely tables looking across the harbour, the Cuban music makes a nice change from the usual rock or house.

Harbourside Pub, 136 Main Rd, Kalk Bay. Daily 1100-2400. Old-fashioned and pleasant pub on the first floor with a great balcony overlooking Main Rd and the harbour. Good meals, live music – usually jazz – at weekends.
