Despite Cape Towns major role as a film location the city and its surrounds have acted as stand-ins for an impressive range of films in recent years there is very little in the way of local cinema. Instead, cinemas tend to screen Hollywood blockbusters and mainstream releases. The two major cinema groups are Nu Metro and Ster- Kinekor, both of which have several modern multi-plexes dotted around the city. Some of the Ster-Kinekor multi-plexes (V & A Waterfront and Cavendish Square) have an attached Cinema Nouveau, concentrating on foreign and art-house cinema. There are also a couple of independent cinemas which screen international and art-house releases. New films are released on Friday. Evening and weekend shows are very popular so booking ahead is a good idea. Daily newspapers and the monthly Cape Review have full listings.
