Dharma Club, 68 Kloof St, Gardens, T 021-4220909, http://www.the dharmaclub.com Daily 1700-late. Small, trendy bar with vaguely Asian decor. Intimate setting and excellent music mixed by a live DJ, good fusion meals, but an over-dressed, pretentious crowd.

D-lite, Loop St, T 021-2216038. Late starter. House sounds with a factory interior.

The Fez, 38 Hout St, T 021-4231456, http://www.fez.co.za 1800-late. R40. Moroccan-themed interior, young and well-heeled crowd, funky house and themed parties.

Vacca Matta, Seeff House, Foreshore, T 021-4195550. Wed-Sat, 1900-late. R20. Full on drinking haunt and cramped club with waitresses dancing on the bar, ‘ladies’ get in for cheap and often get free cocktails, seriously tacky but resolutely popular.

Cantina Tequila, Quay 5, Victoria Wharf, T 021-4190207. Daily, 1100-late, R20 after 2300. This Mexican restaurant transforms into a packed nightclub after about 2300, mostly chart music, popular with tourists.

Angels, 27 Somerset Rd, Green Point, T 021-4198547. Wed, Fri, Sat, 2200-late. R20. One of the most popular gay clubs in town, with a pleasant outdoor courtyard and bar leading onto a huge dance floor. Friendly, unpretentious crowd, mostly house and techno plus some cheesy tunes.

Club 55, Somerset Rd, Green Point, T 021-4251849, http://www.55.co.za Daily 1100-late (opens 2100 on cabaret nights). R20. Popular gay club, seats on pavement lead to busy dance floor inside, well-known DJs spin trance and progressive house on Friday and Saturday, cabaret on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.
