Celebrations are a serious business in Cape Town, and during the summer months youll be hard pressed to find a free weekend. The city makes the most of its beautiful setting, with most events taking place outdoors. Street carnivals and festivals compete with cultural and sporting events, although perhaps the best known event is the Karnaval in January, a street parade of competing minstrel bands. Other festivals to look out for is the young and vibey Long Street Carnival, the excellent Jazz festival held in March, and of course the famous summer concerts held at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Surprisingly, publicity is often limited and you may only hear about an event after it has taken place, but the Cape Times usually has good up-to-date information on whats on, or have a look at http://www.capetownevents.co.za The winter months are a lot quieter, although this is the best time to visit Hermanus for its superb whale watching and its Whale Festival.
