Several spotless dorms plus double rooms, good views of Table Mountain, internet and travel centre, café and bar serving great breakfasts, snacks and meals, helpful management, but can be a bit too quiet.

E-F Carnaby Backpacker, 219 Main Rd, Three Anchor Bay, Sea Point, T 021-4397410, F 4391222, http://www.carnabybackpacker.co.za Building used to be a hotel, now offers great value double rooms with en suite facilities, as well as spacious dorms, and all the usual facilities expected in a well managed backpacker hostel. Bar, swimming pool, travel service. In the Top-10 hostels.

F Brown Sugar, 1 Main Rd, Green Point, T 021-4330413, F 0860102291, http://www.brownsugar.get.to Busy but laid-back hostel near the Waterfront, on noisy Main Road, dorms, doubles and some camping space, shared bathrooms, popular bar with party atmosphere, Ganeshi restaurant with chill-out Goa lounge, good place to meet people.

F St John’s Waterfront Lodge, 6 Braemar Rd, Green Point, T 021-4391404, F 4391424, http://www.stjohns.co.za Closest hostel to the Waterfront. Dorms and doubles spread across two houses, sundeck, two pools, bar, braai, friendly and helpful staff, travel centre.

F Globe Trotter, 17 Queens Rd, Sea Point, T 021-4341539, guest phone T 021-4397113. Small town house on the fringe of Sea Point with three dorms, TV lounge, dining area, secure lockers. An easy walk along the coast to Clifton beach and Bantry Bay, public transport to city centre, cheapest in town.

F Stans Halt Youth Hostel, The Glen, Camps Bay , T 021- 4389037. A great, cheap alternative amongst the super-wealthy on the slopes of Table Mountain. Five dorms with six beds in each, set in a wooded garden, with kitchen, breakfasts and dinner to order. Bike hire, very popular in season, call in advance.

F Sunflower Stop, 179 Main Rd, Sea Point, T 021-4346535, F 4346501, http://www.sunflowerstop.co.za Dorms with more room than most, doubles, excellent clean place with a huge kitchen, meals available too. Swimming pool, bar, satellite TV, tours and travel advice. Great location. Free airport and city pickup.

F The Green Elephant, 57 Milton Rd, Observatory, T 0800-222722/4486539, guest telephone T 021-4475842, greenelephant@iafrica.com A full-on backpacker joint, not to everyone’s taste but helpful and knowledgeable staff, plenty going on in the area away from the city centre, old house hidden behind high walls in compact suburb, dorms plus a couple of double rooms with four-poster beds, happy to organize trips to the regional sights, free collection, have a second house with five double rooms which is very popular.

F SA’s The Alternative Place, 64 St Michaels Rd, Claremont, T/F 021-6742396, alternative_place@mweb.co.za Clean dorms sleeping four, two double rooms, kitchen, garden with pool, bar and braai. A small homely setup run by Susan and Alun who have excellent Southern and East African travel experience. A bit far from the town centre, but worth checking out. Free airport pickup.
