F Ashanti Lodge, 11 Hof St, Gardens, T 021-4238721, F 4238790, http://www.ashanti.co.za This has become one of the citys best-known hostels, not least for its party atmosphere. Medium size dorms and small doubles in huge old house with polished wooden floors, large windows and communal balconies. Some rooms surround a courtyard and small pool. Lively bar serving good snacks, with pool table and TV MNet. Free airport and station pickup, excellent booking centre, internet and video room. Firmly on the busy overland truck route, can be very noisy (and bathrooms get rather messy), but perfect for meeting people.
