Cape Jazz is perhaps Cape Towns greatest cultural gift, and if you get the chance try and see some live acts while youre here. Jazz was, and remains, an important expression of cultural trends in modern South Africa and Cape Town has produced some of its greatest exponents. The North Sea Jazz Festival is held every March and attracts a glittering array of artists, including Erykah Badu, Hugh Masekela and Judith Sephuma in 2002. Classical music and opera, although only recently moving away from the realm of the white and wealthy, is becoming increasingly accessible not least at the summer concerts held at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Cape Town also has a well-respected Philharmonic Orchestra, with concerts held at the Artscape Complex. Rock and funk bands are big business, and are best caught at the Long Street or Obs Festivals the controversially named band Golliwog is one of the most popular funk bands at the moment. Busy bar and live jazz, intimate venue compared to others, friendly, well-heeled crowd, good food served, very popular jazz nights at the weekend. Green Dolphin, V & A Waterfront, T 021-4217471. 1200-late. Best place in Cape Town to hear top quality jazz. Independent Armchair Theatre, 135 Lower Main Rd, Observatory, T 021-4471514. 1800-midnight. Popular venue with huge sofas to lounge in, jazz on Thursday, live bands most nights.
