Cape Jazz is perhaps Cape Town’s greatest cultural gift, and if you get the chance try and see some live acts while you’re here. Jazz was, and remains, an important expression of cultural trends in modern South Africa and Cape Town has produced some of its greatest exponents. The North Sea Jazz Festival is held every March and attracts a glittering array of artists, including Erykah Badu, Hugh Masekela and Judith Sephuma in 2002.

Classical music and opera, although only recently moving away from the realm of the white and wealthy, is becoming increasingly accessible – not least at the summer concerts held at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. The Cape Town Opera, http://www.cape townopera. co.za, stages regular performances, with new up-and-coming singers leading the way. Cape Town also has a well-respected Philharmonic Orchestra, with concerts held at the Artscape Complex.

Rock and funk bands are big business, and are best caught at the Long Street or Obs Festivals – the controversially named band Golliwog is one of the most popular funk bands at the moment.

The Brass Bell, Kalk Bay, T 021-7885455. 1200-late. This long-term favourite has one of the best locations on False Bay, set just above the waves with views of the Atlantic. The bar is nothing special. Serving up cheap meals and beers to a young, surfer crowd. Music is rock and pop with live bands on weekends.

Dizzy Jazz Café, 41 The Drive, Camps Bay, T 021-4382686. Mon-Fri 1700-late, Sat and Sun 1000-late, closed Tue. Busy bar and live jazz, intimate venue compared to others, friendly, well-heeled crowd, good food served, very popular jazz nights at the weekend.

Drum Café, 32 Glyn St, Gardens, T 021-4611305, http://www.drumcafe. co.za 2000-late. Popular, featuring communal drumming sessions or professionals on Friday and Saturday nights.

Green Dolphin, V & A Waterfront, T 021-4217471. 1200-late. Best place in Cape Town to hear top quality jazz.

Independent Armchair Theatre, 135 Lower Main Rd, Observatory, T 021-4471514. 1800-midnight. Popular venue with huge sofas to lounge in, jazz on Thursday, live bands most nights.

Kirstenbosch Summer Concerts, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, http://www.nbi.ac.za Every Sun at 1700 Nov to Mar. Idyllic setting, picnics on the lawns, concerts varying from folk and jazz to classical and opera.
