Cape Times/FNB Big Walk takes place on a weekend in the middle of the month. It is the worlds largest timed walk, with an estimated 20,000 people taking part. The walk, marketed as a fun-walk but with a more serious, longer walk added on for sporty types, has been going on for some time, having started in 1903, and is aimed specifically at raising money for charities. See http://www.bigwalk.co.za for details. Smirnoff International Comedy Festival, held at the Baxter Theatre, is a week-long festival following a similar week-long event in Johannesburg. There is a nightly Smirnoff show, featuring between five and 10 stand-up comedians, including local talent and British, American and Australian imports. The standard is generally very high, as is the demand for tickets, so be sure to book ahead. There are also a couple of individual stand-up shows at comedy venues around town.
