RRR Kotobuki, 3 Mill St, Gardens, T 021-4623675. 1100-2300 closed Mon. Japanese, no-frills top-class menu, expensive for Cape Town, but a favourite amongst the Japanese community.

RR The Africa Café, Heritage Sq, 108 Short Market St, Centre, T 021-4220221. Mon-Sat 1800-2300. The original in Observatory moved here recently, but despite becoming more upmarket, the food remains an excellent introduction to the continent’s cuisines. The menu is a set ‘feast’ and includes 10 dishes that rove around the continent, from Malawian Mbatata balls and Kenyan patties, to Cape Malay mango chicken curry and Egyptian dips. The price includes the chance to order more of the dishes you like, as well as coffee and dessert. Good value and excellent service, although very touristy.

RR Café Paradiso, 110 Kloof St, Gardens, T 021-4238653. 0900/1000-2300. Tuscan setting for this relaxed Italian restaurant. Some fine local dishes, but the best options are the Italian dishes. Recommended.

RR Rozenhof, 18 Kloof St, Gardens, T 021-4241968. Mon-Fri 1230-2300, Sat 1900-late. Smart restaurant set in an attractive 18th-century town house, decorated with local artwork and chandeliers, food to match the surrounds, sensible light dishes full of flavour, look out for seasonal dishes such as asparagus and salads, good choice for vegetarians.
