RR Rozenhof, 18 Kloof St, Gardens, T 021-4241968. Mon-Fri 1230-2300, Sat 1900-late. Smart restaurant set in an attractive 18th-century town house, decorated with local artwork and chandeliers, food to match the surrounds, sensible light dishes full of flavour, look out for seasonal dishes such as asparagus and salads, good choice for vegetarians.

RR Mama Africa, 178 Long St, T 021-4248634. 1900-late. Popular restaurant and bar serving ‘traditional’ African dishes often with great live music. Popular with tourists, tasty food if overpriced, excellent service. Centrepiece is a bright green carved mamba-shaped bar. Slightly tacky but a very fun place.

RR Pagoda Inn, 29 Bree St, Centre, T 021-4252033. Chinese restaurant with a good selection of dishes, choice of small or large portions.

RR Saigon, corner Camp and Kloof sts, Gardens, T 021-4247670, zenasia@iafrica.com 1200-1500, 1800-2300. Superb Vietnamese cuisine, very popular place overlooking busy Kloof St, brilliant crystal spring rolls, barbecued duck and caramelized pork with black pepper. Book ahead. Recommended.

RR Star*, 273 Long St, T 021-4246576. 1100-late. Trendy establishment serving good seafood, salads and a couple of Portuguese dishes. Friendly service and getting popular with a well-heeled young crowd. Turns into a fiercely fashionable bar from about 2300. Only seven tables, so come early or book.

RR Sukhothai, 12 Mill St, Centre, T 021-4655846. Good Thai cuisine, set menus for the confused, advisable to book at the weekend, authentically Thai, hot and spicy.

RR Yindee’s, 22 Camp St, Tamboerskloof, T 021-4221012. Mon-Fri 1200-late, Sat and Sun 1800-late. An excellent Thai restaurant serving authentic spicy curries and soups. Served in a sprawling Victorian house with traditional low tables. Service can be very slow, but the place is always popular, so book ahead.

RR yum, 2 Deer Park Dr, Vredehoek, T 021-4617607. 1000-2300. Stylish deli and restaurant serving excellent sandwiches, salads and original pasta dishes, such as roast lamb tortellini or goat’s cheese and roasted pepper lasagne. Good service, relaxed young crowd, delicious pickles and chutneys on sale. Recommended.

R Arnold’s, 60 Kloof St, Gardens, T 021-4244344, http://www.arnolds. co.za 1200-late. Good value lunch spot on busy Kloof Street, good salads, pasta and more substantial meals like ostrich steak. Fast, friendly service.
