Dotted Line

R Arnold’s, 60 Kloof St, Gardens, T 021-4244344, http://www.arnolds. co.za 1200-late. Good value lunch spot on busy Kloof Street, good salads, pasta and more substantial meals like ostrich steak. Fast, friendly service.

R The Crypt, 1 Wale St, below St George’s Cathedral, T 021-4249426. 1000-1600. Despite its suspect location, this restaurant has lovely sunny tables set out on Wale Street and serves the usual sandwiches and salads plus excellent daily pasta specials. Perfect for people-watching in the summer, or huddling in the vaulted interior in winter.

R Maeströs, Kloof St, Gardens, T 021-4243015. 1000-late. Restaurant and pub, food of a high standard.

R Marco’s African Place, 15 Rose St, Centre, T 021-4235412. 1800-2300. African menu, live music, huge, smoky place with a friendly atmosphere, excellent starters but main courses are disappointing.

R Ocean Basket, 75 Kloof St, Gardens, T 021-4220322. 0900-2300, open weekends in the evening. A successful, good value franchise serving seafood and salads, pleasant setting with a large courtyard at the back. No bookings, expect to queue outside on the street.

R Primi Piatti, Greenmarket Sq, Centre, T 021-4247466. Mon-Sat 0900-late. Lively spot for lunch overlooking the square from the huge open windows. Superb pizzas, good pasta and salads, huge portions at reasonable prices, popular with a young fashionable crowd.

R Shambhala, 134 Long St, Centre, T 021-4265452, http://www.shambhala.co.za 0900-2100. Relaxed vegetarian restaurant serving salads, sandwiches and good daily specials. Calm Buddhism-inspired decor, friendly service, great spot for lunch.

RRR Baia, top floor, Victoria Wharf, T 021-4210935. 1200-1500, 1900-2300. Newest addition to Cape Town’s fine restaurants. Very smart (and expensive) venue specialising in seafood. Delicious, rich dishes following a Moçambique theme – try the beer-baked prawns. Stylish, moodily lit interior with views of Table Mountain, slightly erratic service. Book ahead.

RRR Emily’s, Clock Tower centre, T 021-4211133. 1200-1430, 1830-late. The old Woodstock favourite recently moved to the top floor of the new Clock Tower centre. Very smart restaurant serving excellent French-style cuisine, great views from balcony overlooking the Waterfront, polite service, popular, book.
