RR Chapman’s Peak Hotel, Hout Bay, T 021-7901036. Opposite end of town to harbour. 0800-late. Book in the evenings, a lively restaurant and bar.

RR Clifton Beach House, 4th Beach, Clifton, T 021-4381955. 0800-2300. Breakfast, lunch and dinner over- looking Clifton’s beautiful beach, good seafood plus some Thai dishes, relaxed during the day but more elegant at night.

RR Dunes, Hout Bay Beach, T 021-7901876. 1200-2200. Sprawling restaurant overlooking the dunes behind the beach, very popular with families, large menu, quick service but the food can disappoint – stick to the tasty fish and chips.

RR L’Orient, 50 Main Rd, Sea Point, T 021-4396572. 1900-2300, evenings only. Indonesian and Malaysian, a popular and authentic restaurant serving a wide range of exotic dishes. The Rijsttafel has 17 individual dishes. Recommended.

RR Ocean Blue, Victoria Rd, Camps Bay, T 021-4389838. 1200-2200. Friendly seafood restaurant on road overlooking the beach. Excellent fresh seafood, especially daily specials, superb grilled prawns and butterfish kebabs. Less pretentious than many of the restaurants in the area.

RR Red Herring, Chapman’s Bay Trading Centre, Beach Rd, T 021-7891783. Tue-Sun, 1200-late. Excellent country cuisine, attached Sunset pub, but distracting sunlight from the stained glass windows.

RR San Marco, 92 Main Rd, Sea Point, T 021-4392758. Wed-Mon 1900-2300. A long-term favourite. Extensive Italian menu specializing in seafood. Excellent antipasto, plenty of vegetarian options, wonderful desserts. Upmarket and expensive, but worth it.
