RR San Marco, 92 Main Rd, Sea Point, T 021-4392758. Wed-Mon 1900-2300. A long-term favourite. Extensive Italian menu specializing in seafood. Excellent antipasto, plenty of vegetarian options, wonderful desserts. Upmarket and expensive, but worth it.

RR Wangthai, 105 Paramount Pl, T 021-4396164. 1130-1500, 1800-2300. Great Thai restaurant serving mouth- watering stir-fries, curries with coconut milk and plenty of lemon grass. Reservations advised.

R Avanti, 341 Main Rd, Sea Point, T 021-4391857. 1200-2200. Full range of Italian meals, good value.

R Chariots, 107 Main Rd, Green Point, T 021-4345427. 1000-2200. Excellent local Italian restaurant serving traditional and innovative pasta dishes (try the curried butternut ravioli), superb risotto, salads and meat dishes. Low-key and relaxed, good service, tables overlooking Main Rd, popular with young professionals. Excellent value for money. Recommended.

RRR Au Jardin, Vineyard Hotel, Colinton Rd, Newlands, T 021-6831520. 1200-1400, 1900-2200, closed Sun, Mon and Jul. A very smart hotel restaurant with one of the best French menus in Cape Town. Six-course meals or a quick plat du jour served in a stylish setting with views of the mountain. Polite service, excellent presentation. The best local ingredients turned into the best European recipes. Recommended. Booking advised.

RRR Buitenverwachting, Klein Constantia Rd, Constantia, T 021-7943522. Tue-Sat 1200-1400, 1900-2200. One of the best restaurants in Cape Town, flawless Italian and French cuisine, good service, upmarket, prices reflect the quality of the food.

RRR The Cellars, The Cellars-Hohenort Hotel, 93 Brommersvlei Rd, Constantia, T 021-7942137. 1200-1400, 1800-2300. A highly praised menu which might be too trendy for some palates. The restaurant is in an exclusive five-star hotel. A little too formal for a fun night out, but still one of the best hotel-based restaurants in the area.

RRR La Colombe, Constantia Uitsig, Constantia, T 021-7942390. Closed Tue and Sun evening, Jul and Aug. Excellent French menu with strong Provençal flavours. Delicious fresh fish and a range of meat and duck dishes, with an emphasis on rich sauces. During fine weather you can sit outside and look over the gardens and a pool.
