RRR Parks, 114 Constantia Rd, Constantia, T 021-7978202. Closed Mon. Enjoy a drink in the lounge before moving into one of the two dining areas overlooking a colourful garden. Broad range of well-presented dishes, making good use of fresh local produce. Mostly traditional dishes, plenty for vegetarians, excellent service. Recommended.

RRR Steenberg, Steenberg Country Hotel, Spaanschemat River Rd, Constantia, T 021-7132222. 1200-1500, 1900 late. The principal restaurant in a five-star hotel. Tables are set in cosy alcoves created from old wine vats. An expensive and smart place to dine out, but like many hotel restaurants lacks a spontaneous character. International menu designed to satisfy the tastes of hotel guests from all over the world.

RR Barrister’s Grill, corner of Kildare and Main St, Newlands, T 021-6741792. 0800-late. A popular steakhouse that has expanded into a trendy bistro/café during the day with plenty of alfresco tables. Still retains the Mock-Tudor timber decor of the steakhouse. Plenty for vegetarians.

RR Kirstenbosch Restaurant, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens, T 021-7998783. 1200-2200. Stunning setting at the bottom of the gardens, with views up towards Table Mountain. Fairly pricey but good meals, including Cape specialities such as bobotie, plus salads, steaks and pasta. Friendly service.

RR Rory’s, Lower Main Rd, Observatory, T 021-4488301. 1900-late. Stylish and homely restaurant run by chef Rory, menu changes daily, excellent fresh ingredients with a fusion twist, relaxed setting and trendy crowd.

R Don Pedro’s, 113 Roodebloem Rd, Woodstock, T 021-4474493, info@donpedro.co.za 1100-late. Informal, bustling restaurant serving huge portions of South African food, pasta and pizza at cheap prices. Very popular, focal point of the community, great mixed crowd, book ahead. Recommended.

R Fratelli, Cavendish Sq, Claremont, T 021-6836018. 1000-2200. Set in popular food court, cheerful good-value pasta and steaks.

R Mango, Cavendish Sq, Claremont, T 021-6741350. 1200-2200. Friendly place serving a mix of South African and US-style food, ribs, stews, seafood, burgers. Good spot to fill up before seeing a film upstairs.
