Cape Towns theatre scene has suffered somewhat in recent years, largely due to the reallocation of government funds and the decline of political theatre, a pivotal genre in the Apartheid era. Cutting-edge productions are few and far between, while large-scale musicals remain the most popular form of theatre Cats recently opened here and it is a huge success. Most mainstream performances are held at the Artscape Complex, but for more alternative productions try the Baxter Theatre, usually the most reliable venue for quality, thought-provoking performances.
