City centre tours
Cape Town Tourism owns the Explorer Bus, a double- decker topless bus which follows a two-hour route around the city. Contact the main tourist office for details, T 021-4264260. Elwierda Topless Tours, T 021-4185888, also organizes a two-hour city tour. Buses depart hourly between 0940 and 1440, starting from the Waterfront.
Cultural tours
Grassroute Tours, T 021-7061006, http://www.grassroutetours.com, specializes in township tours beginning in District Six and continuing to Langa and Khayelitsha, also a history of Cape Muslims tour. This company works with the communities it visits, putting back some of the proceeds. Half-day tours cost around R225. Western Cape Action Tours, T 021-4611371, wcat@iafrica.com Township tours with a strong focus on political issues, with visits to historically significant sights, discussions are encouraged, tours are led by people who took part in the liberation struggle. More thought- provoking and less voyeuristic than most other tours. Half-day tours R180. Recommended. Tana-Baru Tours, T 021-4240719, conduct specialist tours of the Cape Malay Quarter lasting two hours. Led by Shereen Habib, they are interesting and good value, about R80 per person. Also offer township tours lasting three hours and costing from R250. Roots Africa Tours, T 021-9878330, http://www.rootsafrica.co.za, Khayelitsha Township tours, Winelands, Robben Island trips.
Whale Coast tours
Coastal Kayak Trails, T 021-3410405, offer various routes and guided kayak tours. Dyer Island Cruises, T 021-3841266, take punters on boat trips to Dyer Island. Southern Right Charters, T 082-3530550, are a boat-based whale watching company. Walker Bay Adventures, just out of town towards Gansbaai at Prawn Flats, T 021-3140925, kwanzyl@netdial.co.za, hire out all types of boats, canoes, rowing boats, pedaloes, plus fishing equipment. Daily cruises on the lagoon, weather permitting, for larger groups. The ever-popular sundowner cruise is also on offer.
