Denmark has always benefited from a thriving arts scene and Copenhagen is very much a one-stop- shop for film, dance, music and theatre.
Danes are very proud of their own film industry and output. Dogma, an artistic/cinematic movement spearheaded by Lars Von Trier with strict rules and techniques aimed at changing the sensational trickery of film-making in favour of the reality of character and situation, firmly re-established Denmark on the international film map during the late 90s. Film plays a seminal role in the entertainment calendar of most Copenhageners. Their appetite for the big screen is reflected in the number and popularity of cinemas throughout the city, both multiplexes and art-house cinemas. With more than 100 rock, folk and jazz festivals every year, and a growing international concert scene, Copenhagen is buzzing on the live-music front, and generally has something for everyone all year round. The fringe theatre and dance scenes, unlike their European counterparts, are revered for their innova- tion rather than scorned as the poor relation to the grand theatres that play host to big productions.
