Dotted Line

Azhiba, Læderstræde 32, T 33135060. Mon-Thu 1200-2400, Fri-Sat 1200-0100. Meaning ’fantastic’ in Arabic, it’s just that. The decor and ambience is Nordic Africa meets Denmark. The Danish design within is rendered in natural materials (stone, wood, leather) and colours (sandy and earthy browns). Very loungey feel with self-conscious but unpretentious crowd. Well-stocked bar at city prices.

Aura, Rådhusstræde 4, T 33365060. Fri-Sat 1100-0300. Weekend-only cocktail bar (restaurant at other times) with lounge music and a sophisticated affluent crowd. Serve around 20 of their own cocktails. Chic, minimalist decor.

Drop Inn, Kompagnistræde 34, T 33112404. Until 0500 daily. This large bar entertains a relaxed middle-of-the road crowd with live jazz- and folk-inspired music. The frontage opens up in the summer months and tables spill out onto the quaint pavements and make it a very desirable option and welcome break from other hyper-cool hangouts. Cheap beer before 1900, reasonable prices thereafter.

Krasnapolsky, Vestergade 10, T 33328800. Mon-Wed 1000-0200, Thu-Sat 1000-0500, Sun 1400-2400. Debuted in the 80s and caused a frenzy, and still going pretty strong. Chilled and low-key during the week but kicks into life Thu-Sat when DJs play R&B, funk and disco until 0500. Needs a facelift and less ambitious bar prices, but that doesn’t seem to have waned it’s popularity thus far. Local artist exhibit on the walls and are often very good.

Mojo, Løngangstræde 21C, T 33116453. Daily 2000-0500. Live blues everynight along with cheap draught beer between 2000-2200. Mixed late-20s, early-30s crowd. Extremely smoky, small and grubby, but always rammed the rafters – just as a blues joint should be.

Peder Oxe’s Vinkælder, Gråbrødretorv 11, T 33111193. Until 0100 daily. A cavernous, atmospheric, cosy cellar bar that serves up a good range of wines and cocktails amidst good world, latin and funk beats. A hidden ambient gem.

Luftkastellet, Strandgade 100B, T 32540369. Translates as ’Castle in the Air’. An unused harbour area transformed into a very hip beach bar with sand on the waterfront and a high-ceiling warehouse restaurant. Expect anything from jazz and dub, to indian and soft house. Seasonal opening.

Andy’s Bar, Gothersgade 33B, T 33124685. Until 0500 daily. Run-down nightbar with a traditional pub atmosphere and interior. A wateringhole for a mixed crowd – from urban hipsters to hardened drinkers. No other place like it town.

Bo-Bi Bar, Klareboderne 14, T 33125543. Well- kept bar with a definite pub feel. Jazz is played as a background to conversation. Relaxed place to meet friends and socialise among a strange mix of a young arty bohemian clientele and older men who like a fine whisky.
