Bo-Bi Bar, Klareboderne 14, T 33125543. Well- kept bar with a definite pub feel. Jazz is played as a background to conversation. Relaxed place to meet friends and socialise among a strange mix of a young arty bohemian clientele and older men who like a fine whisky.

Dan Turell, Store Regnegade 3-5, T 33141047. Mon-Tue 0900-2400, Wed 0900-0100, Thu 0900-0200, Fri-Sat 0900-0400, Sun 1000-2400. A favourite of fashion-conscious media types and wannabes. Its many windows, mirrored walls and lack of intimate corners create a goldfish bowl effect that may not be for the shy or retiring. Expensive bar prices, but lively and entertaining. A great people-watching experience to be had.

Fisken, Nyhavn 27, T 33119906. Mon-Thu 0900-0300, Fri-Sat 0900-0500, Sun 0900-0200. Tatty nautical cellar bar/pub situated in the tourist trap of Nyhavn (New Harbour). Fishing nets and fishing paraphernalia decorate the walls, ceilings and any other available space. Unlike the other offerings along this stretch, it has unique charm and warmth. Live music, usually folky, every evening. Neither trendy or typically Danish, but very very cosy and inviting.

Zoo Bar, Kronprinsensgade 7, T 33156869. Mon-Wed. Cool two-room hangout. Serves its own Zoo burger, which is very good, along with other basic snacks until 2100 (2200 on Fri). DJs turn out impressive funk-groove sets that keep it filled to the brim Thu-Sat.

Bang & Jensen Istedgade 130, T 33255318. Mon-Fri 0800-0200, Sat 1000-0200, Sun 1000-2400. A long-standing institution (converted chemist) on Istedgade that is home-from- home for many locals who flock to revel in its rundown kitsch familiarity and enjoy brunch. Busy pre-clubbing bar at weekends, and around the clock during summer months when it expands onto the streets.

Delicatessen, Vesterbrogade 120, T 33221633. Mon-Wed 1100-2400, Thu-Sat 1100-0300, Sun 1100-2400. Beautifully concrete and stark by design with an impressive metallic buffed bar. Fashionable eaterie/hangout that serves a good range of drinks, including mid-priced (50-60Kr) cocktails. Thursday to Saturday a pre-clubbing crowd ascend to warm-up to ambient and funky sounds from local DJs.

Ideal Bar, Enghavevej 40, T 33 25 70 11. Wed 1800-0200, Thu 1800-0400, Fri-Sat 1800-0500. Extremely popular hangout which is part of the Vega outfit. Friendly music- and fashion-conscious Vesterbrø crowd. The layout and interior is loungey with a small dancefloor. Latin, world and funk sets. Big queues from 1200 at weekends.

Märkbar, Vesterbrogade 106A, T 33212393. Mon-Wed 1500-0200, Thu-Sat 1500-0500. Cosy cellar bar serving a good selection of beers and speciality drinks, such as TV-Bingo and the very expensive (180Kr) but lethal Blietzkrieg (Tequila, Gin, Rum, Starka Vodka, Blue Bols plus mixers). Happy hour between 2000-2100 when you can grab two Budvar for 30kr. On the sound front, expect Nick Cave and German alternative rock.

Obelix, Vesterbrogade 53, T 33313414. Daily 0830-0200. Welcoming cartoon-themed bar overlooking Vesterbro Torv (square). Nothing fancy or adventurous, but a relaxed place to meet and chat with a beer.
