Obelix, Vesterbrogade 53, T 33313414. Daily 0830-0200. Welcoming cartoon-themed bar overlooking Vesterbro Torv (square). Nothing fancy or adventurous, but a relaxed place to meet and chat with a beer.

Riesen, Oehlenschlägersgade 36, T 33230734. Thu-Sat 2000-0200. Small and simple bar filled with local boys and bar stools, both fall over as the night progresses. Old classics and overlooked films are run on the ceiling TV, while music is only ever background. Good selection of alcohol and drinks at low prices. A White Russian will set you back 40Kr.

Riga, Istedgade 79, T 33252560. Tue-Wed 1500-0100, Thu-Sun 1100-0100. Small shabby bar popular with a chilled arty west end crowd and local Istedgade residents. A spinning glitter ball hanging between the two back lounge rooms are as elegant as it gets, but the threadbare comfy sofas are part of the charm. Basic, inexpensive bar.

Bankeråt, Ahlefeldtsgade 29, T 33936988. Until 2400 daily. Perfect place to start an evening. Beamed ceilings and candlelight contribute to the relaxed look and feel, which is a far cry from the mid-90s sterile bar concept. Sun at 2100 during the winter season they show big screen movies.

Barcelona, Fælledvej 21, T 35357611. Mon-Wed 1100-0200, Thu-Sun 1100-0500. An alternative to city bars and clubs. Attracts a spirited crowd who drink and dance the weekend away to DJs spinning light soul and funk. Bit outdated musically and stylistically.

Bibendum, Nansensgade 45, T 33330774. Relaxed but lively rustic-style wine bar serving tapas and some of the finest wine imports. 50 varieties by the glass and 100 by the bottle. Staff are warm and welcoming, as is the atmosphere. Worth calling beforehand to book a table and avoid disappointment.

Bopa, Bopa Plads, T 35430566. Mon-Tue 1030-0100, Wed 1030-0300, Thu-Sat 1030-0500, Sun 1000-2400. Simplistic rustic-style and mainstream uplifting sounds make it a nice pit-stop. Particularly charming in the summer when the clientele are enticed from the small interior dancefloor to chill, chat, sip and flirt outside on rugs and deckchairs.

Barstarten, Kapelvej 1, T 35241100. Mon-Wed 1200-2400, Thu- Sat 1200-0300, Sun 1000-2200. Uninspiring mini- malistic decor and ambience during the week, but the temperature rises along with the sound levels Thursday to Satur day when a pre-clubbing crowd gather to enjoy soul and funk DJ sets.

Kruts Karport, Øster Farimagsgade 12, T 35268638. French-inspired bar serving foreign beers, Absinth (few Danish bars do) and Denmarks biggest selection of speciality whisky (special whisky nights hosted during winter months).
