K Café Sokkelund, Smallegade 36, T 38106400. Mon-Sat 1000- 2130, Sun 1000-1900. Not too far from the Royal Copenhagen factory and in an area where there are none too many places for a decent lunch, the tapas plate of five different tapas for 56kr-85kr is worth a shout. Backgammon and chess can be played and there are occasionally evenings of live music. K Det Gule Hus, 48 Istedgade, T 33259071. 1000-2400 (later at weekends). A smart new café, indicative of Istedgades changing social character, with polished wood floor and black and white 1950s photographs of the neighbourhood. The menu is in Danish but you can hardly go wrong with the range of brunches available up to 1400 each day for around 60kr. A handy joint to stop off for a coffee or quick meal if walking down Istedgade from your hotel. K Hong Kong Grill, Gasværksvej 3, T 33213826. 1400-2330. Handy joint for a quick bite if staying around Istedgade; Chinese take-aways, and burgers, with seats nearby in the garden of the City Hostel. K Mexicansk Mad, Vesterbrogade 171, T 33254800. Mon-Thu 1100-2100, Fri 1100-2200, Sat-Sun 1600-2200. If feeling hungry after a visit to the Carlsberg brewery there is little to recommend by way of food in the area, but if you walk down the hill and turn right onto Vesterbrogade there is a small Mexican takeaway after a couple of hundred metres with one table inside. A few doors down, the Hos Robert pub has an outside table where a takeaway could accompany another glass of the beer. K Café Lars Nørgård, Statens Museum for Kunst (Danish National Gallery), Sølvgade 48, T 33748494. Tue-Sun 1000-1700, Wed 1000-2000. Always a seductive range of cakes and pastries and a daily 98kr-brunch served between 1000 and 1400 in this stylish museum café. Sometimes dishes are inspired by current shows. K Café og Ølhalle, Rømersgade 22, T 33932575. Tue-Sun 1130-1600. The restored 1892 setting of a workers bar in the Arbejdermuseet serves smørrebrød and daily specials around 40kr; similarly priced are the herrings salted, marinated or spiced the spare ribs, liver pâté or meatballs. Stjerne Pilsner, as brewed at the Workers Brewery Stjerne, to wash it down with. K Ma Ma, Nørrebrogade 98, T 35360775. 1100-2300. Ma Ma, on the corner with Sjællandsgade, is just one of the many small takeaways dispensing shawarma (a very soft pitta bread), felafel and pizza along Nørrebrogade between the cemetery and the lakes. Whatever you eat is likely to cost between 10kr and 40kr and makes for a possible picnic in Assistens Kirkegård. K Pastamania, Vendersgade 16, T 33914060. Mon-Fri 1000-2200, Sat-Sun 1200-2200. Only a couple of tables at this small pizza and pasta joint but always good for a takeaway, and handy if staying in one of the nearby hotels. A choice of 28 pizzas averaging around 65kr, pizza slices for half that price, salads, pasta dishes, sandwiches, pitta bread and burgers. K Props Coffee Shop, Blågårdsgade 5, T 35369955. Mon-Wed 1100-2400, Thu-Sat 1100-0200. Sun 1200-2300. Hygee is the karma late at night when jazz music is playing and the candles come out to cast light around the calm, bare wood decor. The food, with specials chalked up on a blackboard opposite the bar, comes from the Shark House next door . Outdoor tables, and coffee only 10kr.
