Comfortable rather than homely. Worth checking the website for special offers that might be available.

Room rates do not include the breakfast buffet. Restaurant, sauna and a snug little bar.

D Hotel Bethel Sømandshjem, Nyhavn 22, T 33130370 , F 33158570 . An old seaman’s hotel delight- fully located in a characterful building at the end of Nyhavn. The cheapest rooms at 745kr are without a harbour view, while the top rate of 895kr is for one of the spacious corner rooms with a grand view. A lift, showers not baths, a café for breakfast and snacks and Nyhavn nightlife down the street. A hotel with a history of serving travellers, and a sociable atmosphere to boot.

LL-L Radisson SAS Royal Hotel, Hammerichsgade 1, T 33426000 , F 33426100 , http://www.radissonas.com You wouldn’t think so from the outside but the most stylish bedrooms in town are to be found here. Everything from the hotel building to the door knobs were originally designed by Arne Jacobsen and his style influenced the recent remodelling of the bedrooms by Yasmine Mahmoudieh. The bathrooms are striking in their use of glass mosaics and green granite floors, and each bedroom has the Swan chair, Jacobsen-designed floor lamp, plumbing details and door handles. Terrific restaurant too , on the top floor.

LL-B First, Vesterbrogade 23, T 33788000 , F 33788080 , http://www.firsthotels.com Busy... with more than 400 rooms this is one of the largest and newest hotels in Denmark, allowing for the top three floors to be non-smoking and a set of 10 rooms specially designed for ladies (!), and all the overly compact bedrooms have an identical clean style of parquet flooring, cherry wood furniture and modern fittings. Breakfast is not included in the rack rates other than at weekends when room rates drop considerably in price. Beware of large coach groups periodically invading the hotel.

L Imperial, Vester Farimagsgade 9, T 33128000 , F 33938031 , http://www.imperialhotel.dk An unstuffy, four-star hotel that accommodates tour groups, business people and holidaymakers with equal efficiency, and the gregarious lobby bar reflects the mix of guests. As well as the standard bedrooms, there are ‘Top Class’ and ‘Deluxe’ rooms costing half as much again. Good restaurant . Well worth checking on the internet for a special rate.

L-AL Scandic Hotel Webers, Vesterbrogade 11B, T 33480400 , F 33917700 , http://www.scandic-hotels.com Part of a big chain of hotels across Scandinavia, and more than one in Copenhagen, the Scandic Hotel Webers has comfortable bed- rooms, sauna, a bar with a happy hour of sorts, a relaxing atrium and above-average breakfasts. Easy to find, on the corner of Vesterbrogade and Colbjørnsnsgade, and not as noisy as the location might suggest.

A-B Grand, Vesterbrogade 9, T 33276900 , F 33276901 , http://www.grandhotelcopenhagen.dk A four-star hotel, popular with English travellers, with a cosy and friendly atmosphere and the marvellous Frascati restaurant on the premises. Situated on the main road but not noisy from the inside; the rooms are not spacious and the lack of king-size beds deters Americans.
