The 1970s leather sofa and armchairs in the lobby suggest the Centrum has seen better days, but the breakfast room is pleasant enough and prices are competitive.

Set back off Vesterbrogade so noise should not be a problem. Hardly brimming with character but okay for a short stay if you just want a place to sleep.

D Ibis Star, Colbjørnsnsgade 13, T 33221100 , F 33212186 , star@accorhotel.dk A brighter, more functional hotel than the nearby Nebo; the snazzier bedrooms have smart, modern furniture; and crisp, clean colours define the decor. Showers not baths in most rooms, a bar and restaurant, and early breakfast available from 0400 (though breakfast is not included in the standard room rate).

For budget hotel accommodation there is nothing to beat Copenhagen’s two Cab Inns, though anyone prone to claustro- phobia might feel penned in by the extremely compact rooms. A design triumph in streamlining, each cabin – the ship term is very appropriate – packs in a shower room, toilet, television, tea-and coffee-making facility, and instructions on the wall on how to flip open the bed and tables. Singles, doubles, triples and four-bed cabins at 510/630/750/870kr and breakfast 50kr. Go for it – if you plan to spend as much time as possible outside of your hotel room.

E Cab Inn Scandinavia, Vodroffsvej 55, T 35361111 , F 35361114 , http://www.cabinn.com">http://www.cabinn.com As above in every respect, though open all year, and sharing the same pleasant, quiet, residential neighbourhood. A non-touristy area but a bakery and pizzeria are close by, a bar on the nearby corner with Johnstrups Allé, and Cafésius not far away doing drinks and meals until late.

A Kong Arthur, Nørre Søgade 11, T 33111212 , F 33326130 , http://www.kongarthur.dk The regal exterior, swanky lobby and richly carpeted foyer announce a quality hotel and four-star Kong Arthur, with its back to the city as it looks out across the lakes, strives to make the mark. Bedrooms – some non-smoking ones available – are classical in style with antique furniture adding grace. The Brøchner restaurant specializes in Danish-French cooking and the bar is open 24 hours. Worth a whirl when special offers charge two nights for the price of one.

B-C Ibsens, Vendersgade 23, T 33131913 , F 33131916 , http://www.ibsenshotel.dk A pleasant three-star, children-friendly hotel with over 100 bedrooms, decorated in a variety of slightly different styles but sharing an easy-going relaxed look. A restaurant and breakfast room, and a good location close to the lakes, lively Nørreport, bus routes and train station.

C Hotel Nora, Nørrebrogade 18B, T 35372021 , F 35372621 , http://www.hotelnora.dk A smart new hotel on busy Nørrebrogade with large bedrooms, showers not baths, complete with coffee- and tea-making facility and a fridge. Internet access. The rooms are tastefully furnished in a contemporary style, brightly decorated with framed modern art on the walls. Singles and four- and six-bed family rooms also available.

D Hotel Rye, Ryesgade 115, T 35265210 , F 35265214 . Buses 1, 6, 14, or 650 from outside Central Station or the town hall. A small hotel situated in a quiet location by one of the lakes and with a large park two minutes away. Reasonably priced rooms from 700/500kr for a double/single and three- and four- bedrooms for 900/1000kr. Showers and toilets are shared but every bedroom has kimonos and slippers, and home-made buns at breakfast time.
