The open front is an invitation to wander in and with over 400 Danish cheeses (and non-Danish ones) attractively displayed, you may want to find room in your luggage for a kilo or two. There is usually an exhibition of some kind or other in the field of design or architecture, while upstairs there is a smart café where you can read design magazines and, on the top floor, a shop selling Scandinavian designs in glass, textiles and kitchen accessories. On Larsbjørnstraede, the second turning on the left when walking up Vestergade from Rådhuspladsen, everything in the shop is made from hemp: trousers, shirts, bags, soap, body lotion, plus seeds of course. Christianias busiest street is laid out with stalls selling cannabis, in blocks or joints, bags of skunk, pipes, pipe fittings (attached to Carlsberg bottles and other memorabilia), pamphlets of cannabis recipes, books on growing the plant, skunk seeds from Holland all clearly priced and weighing scales at the ready. Expect to pay around 100kr for five ready-rolled joints and a similar price for three of the skunk-filled version. Cannabis prices start at about 40kr a gram, with discounts for larger quantities, higher quality stuff from Morocco (the country of origin is usually specified) is about twice this price. Skunk seeds, imported from Holland and sold in packets of half a dozen seeds, range in price from 120kr to over 1,000kr for the top-notch, super-charged variety.
