Once a butchers the tiled floor and walls are original and now an affordable place to enjoy lunch or dinner, plus a take-away section. Prints of you-know-who on the wall alongside old black and white photographs of Copenhagen. The English menu features tapas and the house specialties are oven- grilled steak at 150kr and veal for 119kr, washed down with sangria at 22kr a glass. Michelin-star Italian restaurant in an unlikely setting on the fringe of Christianshavn. Home-made pasta, of course, veal and venison may feature, always fresh fish. Closed on Mon and Thu between Oct- May. Bus no 8 stops close by this huge eatery that seats up to 600. Using its setting as a former military workshop for repairing naval cannon to good effect, Base Camp resembles a stage set for an episode of MASH. Main courses on the fusion- inspired menu are about 150kr and the hearty Sunday brunch for 90kr attracts Copenhageners. KK-K Spiseloppen, Bådmandsstræde 43, Christiania, T 32579558. Take the right turn off Pusher Street and go up the ramshackle stairs in the Loppen building for a delightful change of decor low- ceilinged, designed in wood and reasonable prices to boot. Christianias best restaurant by a long shot, with consistently above-average food. Menus change regularly but expect fusion-inspired dishes. K Morgenstedet, Langgaden, Christiania. 1200-2100. To find Morgenstedet, walk down Pusher St and take a left down past Månefiskeren and its on your left. Once famous for its breakfasts served to ravers in the 1970s, Morgenstedet is a reliable eatery for vegetarians meals around 50kr with the salads and bean stews laid out to view and tables inside or out on a gravelled garden area. Smoking nor alcohol is allowed. K Kammercaféen, Havneplasdsen 1, T 49282052. 0900-1800. Near to the station, in the customs house building behind the tourist office, this café is fine for a coffee or a light meal. The café in the railway station itself is pleasant enough and offers quick meals like goulash for under 50kr.
