Despite its lack of traditional training ground, Copenhagen has a lively theatre scene that spans classical drama to experimental performance art. Plays are predominately performed in Danish. The experimental fringe scene attracts practioners from around the world and often combines narrative, poetry, dance, multimedia and physical theatre, which makes it more accessible to a non Danish-speaking audiences and often culminates in ground- breaking performances.

Cafe Teatret, Skindergade 3, T 33125814, http://www.cafeteatret.dk Three stages showing some of the best experimental performance art. Varied repertoire that often encompasses cabaret, improvisation and world theatre. A hub of everything new and innovative since the 1960s.

Det Kongelige Teater, T 33696969, http://www.kgl-teater.dk The Royal Theatre has a commitment to a varied artistic programme that encompasses drama, opera and ballet. It has three main performance sites. The Gamle Scenen on Kongens Nytorv hosts mainly traditional ballet and opera, Stærkassen situated at Tordenskjoldsgade 5 has a varied repertoire of international and European drama, while the two performance spaces of the Turbinehallerne situated at Adelgade 10 stages 20 to 30 modern drama productions (mainly Danish) per season.

Det Ny Teater, Gammel Kongevej 29, T 33255075, http://www.detnyteater.dk Elegant and grand theatre with three balconies and a capacity of 1,000. Mainstream productions, including international musicals such as Cats. Also stages modern ballet.

Edison, Edisonsvej 10, T 33211490, http://www.bettynansen.dk">http://www.bettynansen.dk Flexible theatre space (part of the Betty Nansen Teater) attracting good physical and experimental performances and new fringe drama.

Kaleidoskop, Nørrebrogade 37, T 35365302, http://www.kaleidoskop.dk Modern experimental theatre and workshops. Venue for the acclaimed International Monologue Festival and other key events.

Østre Gasværk Teater, Nyborggade 17, T 39277177. Old gasworks with a spectacular Dome. Stages a varied programme of modern and experimental performance art.

Terra Nova Teater, Vesterbro Kulturhus, Lyrskovgade 4, T 33799001, http://www.fast.dk/terranova Experimental performances often around socio-political themes. Lots of international collaborations and often staged in English.
