Merrion Square At weekends this is a great place to look for original art works at bargain prices. As well as the tearful pierrots, cute street urchins with seriously over-large eyes and painted velvet pieces, the outdoor displays include some interesting amateur art, with the painters often on hand to tell you all about it.

Temple Bar Gallery and Studios, 5-9 Temple Bar, T 01 671 0073, http://www.templebargallery.com Mon, Wed, Fri and Sat 1000-1800, Thu 1400-1900, Sun 1400-1800. This spot hosts commercial art exhibitions with very high price tags, although the Multiples Gallery on the same site sells prints and lesser-known artists’ works at carry-out prices. The working studios can be visited on request.

Individually crafted ceramics, glass, wood, textiles and furniture are sold upstairs at the Designyard.

Blarney Woollen Mills, 21-3 Nassau St, T 01 671 0066, http://www.blarneywoollenmills.ie Mon-Wed, Fri and Sat 0900-1800, Thu 0900-2000, Sun 1100-1800. The usual barrage of hand-woven clothes, hand-knitted accessories and leprechaun designs. Some good bargains to be had if you poke around.
