Dotted Line

Messrs Maguire, 1-2 Burgh Quay, T 01 670 5777. Daily 1030- 0130. With a late bar every night, its own micro-brewery, an astonishing bar-food menu, giant TV screens for sports fans and traditional music evenings, Messrs Maguire caters to all comers. There are lots of little nooks and crannies to hang out in and all the requisite faux Victorian wood panelling you could possibly want.

O’Donoghue’s, 15 Merrion Row, T 01 660 7194. Mon-Wed 1030-1130, Thu-Sat 1030-0030, Sun 1230-2300. An unreconstructed and pleasant old pub, with lots of impromptu music sessions and an unusual mix of tourists and locals.

Auld Dubliner, 17 Anglesea St, T 01 677 0527. Mon-Thu 1030-2330, Fri and Sat 1030-0030, Sun 1230-2300. Tuned into the huge tourist trade of Temple Bar, the Auld Dubliner serves up good bar food (including coddle) and live traditional music.

Front Lounge, 33-34 Parliament St, T 01 670 4112. Mon, Wed, Sun 1200-2330, Tue 1200-2400, Thu-Sat 1200-0130. Comfy sofas, clever lighting and an extensive wine list ensure that the Front Lounge remains one of Dublin’s most popular bars. Don’t come here if you want to have a knees-up.

Octagon Bar, Clarence Hotel, 6-8 Wellington Quay, T 01 670 9000. Mon-Sat 1000-2300, Sun 1230-2230. This is possibly the coolest bar in town, with good cocktails, big sofas and occasional visits from A-list celebs.

Oliver St John Gogarty, 58-59 Fleet St, T 01 677 5213. Daily 1030-0200. Completely tourist oriented but in a good way, this faux trad pub offers great bar food and live music every afternoon and evening. There are lots of little nooks to sit in, vestiges of old Ireland on the walls and a lively atmosphere.

Palace, 21 Fleet St, T 01 677 9290. Mon-Wed 1030-2330, Thu-Sat 1030-0030, Sun 1230-2300. This is where people who live and work in Temple Bar go for a quiet drink. It’s a friendly old pub that remains totally unfazed by the maelstrom that rages on the streets outside.

Temple Bar, 45 Temple Bar, T 01 672 5286. Mon-Wed 1100- 2400, Thu-Sat 1100-0030, Sun 1200-0030. 0 The unmissable red exterior lures tourists and locals into this popular pub. It’s heaving at all hours, with live traditional music every afternoon. The fun spills out into the beer garden in the summer.

Turk’s Head, 27-30 Parliament St, T 01 679 9701. Daily 1630- 0200. This overpoweringly decorated bar has good bar food and a belly dancer on Tuesdays. Lots of tourists generate a singalong atmosphere that lasts late into the night.
