Open for coffee, tea, sandwiches, cakes and more substantial meals, this Dublin landmark can become crowded to the point of panic at lunch and tea, but is more congenial at other times. A former branch of Bewleys Tea Rooms is now a trendy venue serving pastas, salads and pizzas in a very attractive setting. It morphs into a fashionable night spot in the evenings. Before you settle down for food or drink, wander round and admire an over-the-top version of art deco France. Lunch and brunch dishes are more than just snacks and all cost less than a tenner. Try toasted brioche (the most Francophile item on the menu) or tagliatelle with spinach, cherry tomatoes and pesto, washed down with a margarita or a mai tai. Very, very popular. Pop into Nesbitts, as locals call it, to admire the gorgeously authentic Victorian interiors, to listen to the latest Dublin gossip and to feast on the really good pub food: baked potatoes, chilli, paninis, hot beef rolls and BLTs, all tarted up with lots of good pickles and relishes. Lunch specials served 1200-1600 This modern, bright and stylish place serves little dishes that are perfect for grazing chorizo frito, hummus and tortillas, jamon serrano, paella washed down with wine, beer or designer coffee. Tasty filled baguettes and sandwiches are the order of the day at this quiet, tiny place with a loyal local clientele. Freedom Café, Fleet St. Mon-Sat 0930-2000. In among the selection of Amnesty posters, free-trade chocolate bars, bits of ethnic pottery, arty calendars and birthday cards is a neat if tightly-spaced cyber café selling baguettes, ciabatta sandwiches, cakes and the like for E4 or less.
