Dotted Line

Bojangles, Russell Court Hotel, Harcourt St, T 01 478 4066. Daily 2000-late. E8. Frequented by the over-30s, this long-established club beneath the Russell Court Hotel hosts a good salsa night (including lessons) on Thursdays from 2000.

Gaiety, South King St, T 01 679 5622. Fri and Sat 2400-0400. E12. This old theatre offers three floors of fun: retro hits in the basement, cartoon- and movie-screenings in the auditorium, live salsa and jazz in the main bar and DJs upstairs.

Mono, 26 Wexford St, T 01 475 8555. Mon-Thu, Sun 1600-0230, Fri and Sat 1600-0300. Free. Very young, very studenty and very boozy. There’s music in the bar from 2100 till late and big-name DJs from across the water at weekends.

POD/Redbox, Old Harcourt St Station, Harcourt St. T 01 478 0225. Wed-Sun 2300-0300. E13. These twin super-clubs are seriously stylish and attract a high proportion of clubbers who have an inflated idea of their own attractiveness. Drinks are cheaper on Wednesdays when a studenty tone prevails.

Spy/Wax, Powerscourt Centre, South William St, T 01 677 0014. Tue-Sat 2100-0300, Sun 2200-0300. Spy free Tue-Thu before 2330, E12 at other times. Wax E12 . These perennially sophisticated clubs are usually full of cool, rich people eyeing each other up. Sunday is one of Dublin’s top gay nights .

Sugar Club, 8 Leeson St Lower, T 01 678 7188, http://www.thesugarclub.com Wed-Sat 2030-late. E5-15. There are DJs on Friday and Saturday nights at this new venue on the site of the old Sugar Company. Cinema screens show old movies for the chill-out crowd, while the sound-proofed cocktail lounge offers an escape from the hubbub.

The Ballroom, Fitzsimmons Hotel, East Essex St, T 01 677 9387. Daily 2200-02300. E6-7. This huge pub basement attracts a largely tourist crowd whose aim is to get very tipsy with friends before staggering back to their hotel room at three in the morning. Lots of retro faves on the turntable.

Club M, Blooms Hotel, Anglesea St, T 01 671 5622. Daily 2300- 0230. E7. A booze-fuelled, tourist- oriented, easy-listening pick-up joint that’s enjoyable enough, if you like that kind of thing.

Temple Bar Music Centre, Curved St, T 01 670 9202. Tue-Sat 1030-0230. E13 . This huge place is really a music venue but offers club nights after each gig, which are free to those who’ve attended the live event. Tuesday is salsa night with dance lessons followed by a dedicated club night. For discounted admission, pick up a flyer from the foyer or from the tourist office.
