Four converted Georgian houses one was the birthplace of the Duke of Wellington plus a new block in the same style, surround pretty formal gardens. Spacious, comfortable rooms are supplemented by two restaurants, a pool and a fitness centre, and theres an impressive collection of art scattered around the serene interiors. C-D Camden Court Hotel, Camden St, T 01 475 9666, F 01 475 9677, http://www.camdencourthotel.com Located amid the quaint shops and music pubs of the village quarter, this huge, modern hotel is thankfully away from the street noise of late-night clubbers but remains close enough to all the sights. Best of all, it has its own leisure centre and pool where you can work off all the extra calories you may have consumed at the carvery in the popular Pishogues bar. Secure car parking for hotel guests is a bonus. C-D Mercer Hotel, Mercer St Lower, T 01 478 3677, F 01 478 0328, http://www.mercerhotel.ie With a very central location off Grafton Street, this new, middle-range hotel is far enough out of Temple Bar to afford some peace at night, but still has easy access to shops and city centre sights. L The Clarence, 6-8 Wellington Quay, T 01 407 0800, F 01 407 0820, http://www.theclarence.ie Originally built in 1852 and now owned by U2, as someone will no doubt inform you sooner or later, this venerable old hotel has preserved its original wood panelling amid many modish embellishments: leather-clad lifts, CD players (but no tea- and coffee-making facilities) in the individually designed bedrooms and Egyptian cotton on the king-size beds. The decor is enlivened by rich colours and Irish craftwork; friendly staff wearing designer outfits that look vaguely clerical, and a bookless lounge called the Study has original artwork on the walls. All this contributes to the hotels strange mix of the spartan and the self-indulgent. It has large comfortable rooms, several of which look out onto an internal courtyard, offering a quiet night amid the hubbub of the area. Breakfast can get very busy, so be prepared to get up before the carousers if you want to eat in peace. Downstairs is the Turks Head bar for those who want a short stagger back to their bedrooms; you may even catch sight of the belly dancer who livens the place up now and again. Theres secure parking, a pub with live music and an informal restaurant on site. The large bedrooms and suites would be spacious enough to accommodate a small commune. Silver service sets the tone in the genteel, roomy restaurant, which looks out on to a garden courtyard and the sleek new Ice Bar attracts the citys coolest thirtysomethings. A place to spoil yourself.
