Dotted Line

D Castle Hotel, 3-4 Gt Denmark St, T 01 874 6949, F 01 872 7674, hotels@indigo.ie The Castle is one of our favourites: a lovingly restored Georgian building that offers so much more (at a better price) than some of the faceless hotels around town. There’s an elegant lounge area, comfortable bedrooms and car parking for guests. (Michael Collins used room 201 as one of his safe houses during the War of Independence.)

D Jury’s Inn Custom House, Custom House Quay , T 01 607 5000, F 01 829 0400, http://www.bookajurysinn.com">http://www.bookajurysinn.com Set on the riverside near O’Connell Street, this hotel charges a flat room rate of around E96 per night (check the website for deals), except during rugby weekends when the price rockets. Breakfast in the self-service cafeteria is not included. Front rooms boast views of the river and the Wicklow Hills, but back rooms are quieter.

D Walton’s Hotel, 2-5 North Frederick St, T 01 878 3131, F 01 878 3090, waltonshotel@eircom.net It looks like any other small hotel from the outside, but Walton’s turns out to be a carefully renovated Georgian building. The lounge is a treat, with paintings of Michael Collins and other Republicans on the walls. Comfortable bedrooms (including singles), a car park and friendly, efficient staff all make Walton’s a very decent choice.

B-D Ashling Hotel, Parkgate St, T 01 677 2324, F 01 679 3785, http://www.ashlinghotel.ie The Ashling Hotel is worth considering for any package deals that might be available. Close to Heuston Station and the Phoenix Park, the hotel has great views of the river Liffey and of the rising curls of alcoholic steam from the Guinness brewery on the opposite bank. There are bus stops nearby for access to the town centre. The philosopher Wittgenstein stayed here while writing parts of his Philosophical Investigations in 1948.

B-D Chief O’Neill’s, Smithfield Village, T 01 817 3838, F 01 817 3839, http://www.chiefoneills.com In the centre of reconstructed Smithfield Village, this modern hotel successfully strives to be different, with frosted green glass and modish lighting. The bedrooms have CD players, kettles and nifty sinks, and there’s a café-bar downstairs. Rates do not include breakfast. If you are fed up with anonymous, all-too-similar hotels, consider staying here. The Cobblestone, one of the best music pubs in the city, is located nearby.

A Clontarf Castle Hotel, Castle Ave, Clontarf, T 01 833 2321, F 01 833 0418, info@clontarfcastle.ie Well off the beaten track of swanky hotels, this is a gloriously reconstructed version of the fortified house that was originally built here in 1172. In addition to the large-scale lobby, communal areas include the King’s Table restaurant and two bars.

A-C Gresham Royal Marine, Marine Rd, Dun Laoghaire, T 01 280 1911, F 01 280 1089, http://www.gresham-hotels.com">http://www.gresham-hotels.com By far the classiest hotel in Dun Laoghaire, this place alone makes an extended visit to the seaside suburb worthwhile. The Victorian building has been open to the public since 1865 and offers stirring views of the harbour and the incoming ferries. Elegant, spacious rooms are housed in the old part of the building and in a newer block, with a supplement for harbour views. The hotel also has a sedate restaurant.

B-C Portview Hotel, 6/7 Marine Rd, Dun Laoghaire, T 01 280 1663, F 01 280 0447, portview@club.ie Close to the harbour, this family-run hotel has around 20 bedrooms (eight en suite) and offers a homely atmosphere, open fires, a reliable restaurant and private parking. Special rates are available for children and senior citizens.

D Esplanade Hotel, Strand Rd, Bray, T 01 286 2056, F 01 286 6496, http://www.regencyhotels.com">http://www.regencyhotels.com On the seafront at Bray, this is an evocative-looking hotel, especially when its handsome Victorian façade is lit up at night. Recently renovated, it includes a modern leisure centre, sauna and gym. Check out the website for special deals and discounts. Closed over Christmas.
