Dotted Line

*** The Commons, Newman House, 85-6 St Stephen’s Green, T 01 475 2597. Mon-Fri 1230-1415 and 1900-2215, Sat 1230-1415. Located downstairs in the attractive old Jesuit university building, The Commons serves a sophisticated combination of classical and nouvelle Irish cuisine surrounded by a collection of James Joyce-inspired paintings. The restaurant is open for a pricey lunch, when men in suits predominate, and for dinner, when less formal attire fills the room. On summer evenings, start off with a pre-dinner drink on the terrace, overlooking the secret world of the Iveagh Gardens.

*** Plurabelle, Conrad Hotel, Earlsfort Terrace, T 01 602 8900. Daily 0700-2300. This successful, busy, brasserie-style restaurant makes a great job of providing Mediterranean/modern Irish fare in appealing surroundings. Tables, clad in pretty white cloths, are comfortably far apart, there’s an amazing triptych of old Dublin on one of the walls, the silver-service waiters are friendly without being unctuous and there’s no taped music in the background. Come here to enjoy the great early-bird menu before an event at the Concert Hall over the road or while away a whole evening over the stylish dinner menu (E45 for three courses). There’s also a very popular buffet-style lunch on Sundays for around E35. Vegetarians need have no fear.

*** Rubicon, 6 Merrion Row, T 01 676 5955. Mon-Sat 1230-1430 and 1730- 2230, Sun 1730-2230. Furiously busy at lunchtime with suits frittering away their expense accounts, this place transforms radically in the evening into a quiet, reflective, romantic spot. The restaurant spreads over two floors with open fires in the basement and muted, modern decor throughout. The subtle fusion menu incorporates the best Irish cheeses, lots of seafood and some good options for vegetarians.

** Aya, 48 Clarendon St, T 01 677 1544. Mon-Fri 0800-2300, Sat 1000-2300, Sun 1100-2200. Dublin’s only conveyor-belt Japanese sushi bar offers different menus for breakfast, lunch and dinner, plus other tables for regular dining. The set dinner at E30 is a peculiar mixture of Irish and Japanese dishes, including surf and turf tempura and chocolate cake. An early-bird menu is offered from Monday to Saturday, with five courses and a drink for E21.

** Il Posto, 10 St Stephen’s Green, T 01 679 4769. Mon-Sat 1200-1500, 1800-2300, Sun 1800-2330. This is a little gem in the heart of business-lunch Dublin. Located in an easy-to-miss basement, it’s about as genuinely Italian as you could find in Dublin. Bare floors, washed-out Mediterranean paintwork and Italian music provide the setting for a mix of traditional and modern food, accompanied by a great wine list. Vegetarians will enjoy the food here if they aren’t too choosy. Bear in mind that the à la carte menu is right at the top end of this price range and you’re likely to notch up a pretty hefty bill if you have expensive tastes.

** Jaipur , 41 South Great George’s St, T 01 677 0999. Daily 1230-1530 and 1800-2400. The decor at Jaipur is refreshingly untypical of your average Indian restaurant – all pale wood, postmodern furniture and mood lighting – and the food is a far cry from typical Indian restaurant fare. Vegetarian options, in particular, are the stuff of dreams.

** Juice, 73-8 South Great George’s St, T 01 475 7856. Daily 1100-2300. Juice is a very cool place to consume strange macrobiotic drinks and standard vegetarian fare. There are inexpensive set lunches and a good early-bird menu. Regular customers rave about the veggie burgers.

** Little Caesar, 5 Chatham House, Balfe St, T 01 671 8714. Daily 1230-0030. A Dublin institution that has been operating on this spot for almost 15 years – a very long time in the life of the city’s restaurants. Judging by the queues outside, Little Caesar hasn’t lost its touch either, serving pizzas, pastas and a few old favourites such as pollo al fredo and bistecca alla griglia; main courses cost from E13-18.

** Rajdoot, 26-8 Clarendon St, T 01 679 4274. Daily 1215-1430 and 1800-2300. This excellent Indian restaurant provides all the elements of a memorable evening, from elaborate wall hangings to unintrusive background music. Guests relax in a spacious seating area to pick out their meal in consultation with the courteous staff. Nibble on toasted chickpeas while you wait for your order and then tuck into huge, tasty, subtle dishes, including a relatively vast choice for vegetarians. There is no hassle here, no second sittings, just calm and careful service.
